Fairfax Multi-Academy Trust Physical Education Key Stage 3 Rationale

We promote a high-quality, broad and balanced physical education curriculum which reflects what students have learned and enables students to ‘know more, remember more and be able to do more’.   We aim to inspire all pupils, regardless of sporting ability to succeed and actively participate in competitive sports and other physically demanding activities in differing environments.

We reflect our own context and community, whilst meeting the expectation of the Key Stage 3 national curriculum.  Learning is sequenced clearly and privileges thinking and knowledge over task completion in a broad range of sports and physical activities to meets the needs of all students.  Direct instruction and opportunities for high challenge and structured talk builds knowledge in long term memory.

We promote enjoyment, confidence and character development through a wide range of extra-curricular learning opportunities.  Embedding Trust values, promoting healthy and active lifestyles for lifelong involvement beyond school at are the heart of what we do.

Fairfax Academy Physical Education Key Stage 4 Rationale

We promote a high-quality, broad and balanced physical education curriculum which reflects what students have learned and enables students to ‘know more, remember more and be able to do more’.   We aim to inspire all pupils, regardless of sporting ability to succeed and actively participate in competitive sports and other physically demanding activities in differing environments.

Learning is sequenced and demonstrates a clear transition from Key Stage 3. The curriculum reflects that with age comes a greater disparity in the adherence to physical activity and sport.  Students are prepared for performance in a competitive environment in activity areas synonymous to Fairfax. In addition, students are also taught the benefit of physical activity and introduced to new activities that encourage lifelong participation. The balance between advanced skills and healthy lifestyles is carefully managed.

Skill development benefits those taking Physical Education as an examination subject.  Key vocabulary from the specification is applied in all practical lessons, for the betterment of all students, not just those in the within the GCSE course.

We promote enjoyment, confidence and character development through a wide range of extra-curricular learning opportunities.  Embedding Trust values, promoting healthy and active lifestyles for lifelong involvement beyond school at are the heart of what we do.

Extra Curricular Activities

Extra-curricular opportunities are, and have always been, a high priority.  There are many opportunities for sporting participation and progression to sporting performance through competitive and successful involvement in Sutton Schools. We have Hockey, Birmingham Schools Netball, English Schools Athletics and Saturday morning Rugby fixtures across the Midlands to name but a few. In addition, there is a quality Dance evening as well as a Duke of Edinburgh expedition.

Beyond core participation, there is the opportunity for exam study in GCSE Physical Education and GCSE Dance, where deep theoretical content is paired with practical performance in multiple sporting activities. These option subjects then provide the ideal pathway for KS5 progression in the Sixth Form.
