Design and Technology

Mission Statement

The Faculty of Design and Technology aims to enable all Fairfax learners to become sustainable and successful, resourceful and innovative. Learners who enjoy making progress throughout their DT journey. Learners who are afforded the opportunity to develop into confident individuals, able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives in an advancing technological society. Fairfax provides creative design experiences which build self-esteem, develop risk taking and problem solving skills… Learners work with independence and in collaboration as opportunities arise which celebrate learners ongoing achievements.

Child Development

Child Development is a vocational course set by OCR, and covers all aspects of child development and parental/carer responsibility, from conception to five years. At Fairfax, students will learn theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to create the best conditions for a child’s development and well-being.

Our vocational course in hospitality and catering aims to provide learners with the opportunity to develop a range of specialist and general skills that would support their progression to employment in the hospitality and catering industry.

This vocational course introduces students to the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin study of the health and social care sector and gives learners an experience of the breadth and depth that will prepare them for further study in the health and care work sectors.

Design Technology

In Design Technology, we strive to develop young designers who are considerate to the needs of others, cultural values and the environmental issues that affect design and manufacturing.

At the foundation of Design Technology is creativity and imagination. We aim to develop confident, courageous and innovative designers who communicate and express their own individuality when creating design solutions.

Year 7 – 13 Course information for Design Technology

Cooking and Nutrition

Cooking and Nutrition at Fairfax will equip students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to cook and apply the principles of Food Science, Nutrition and Healthy Eating.

Our curriculum encourages students to cook and enable them to make informed decisions, have a cultural awareness and have a wide range of vital life skills to feed themselves and others affordably and nutritionally now and in later life.


In year 7, 8 and g students have one Lesson per week for half a year We plan five practical lessons, with the other Lessons devoted to the theory side of the subject.
What will you Learn about?
• Nutrition – What are the different nutrients? What role do different nutrients have in the body? What is the relationship between diet and health?
• Food Provenance – Where does our food come from? How are crops processed to me1ke ingredients?
• Food Choice – What are the different factors that influence what we choose to eat?
• Food Science – What scientifically happens to food when it is prepared and cooked?
• Food Safety – How can we ensure that food is prepared, cooked and stored safely?
• Practical Skills and Techniques – Students will learn to use the cooker and will Learn a wide range of food preparation skills.
