Academy Association

Overview

The Fairfax Multi Academy Trust is overseen by the Board of Directors.  Each school’s local Governing Body is known as the Academy Association and has representatives of the school staff,  parents and members of the local community. They meet as a Full Academy Association six times per year and carry out a number of important functions.

They are responsible for appointing the Head of Academy and supporting Mrs Bunn in the leadership of Fairfax. Although they do not manage the operational running of the school, they help to set the strategic direction, create and review policies, objectives and targets which are presented to them by Fairfax staff. They approve the Fairfax budget and review the progress against it. They provide challenge and hold the school leadership to account. The mantra which the association work to is "Being a Critical Friend ".

Parents/Carers and members of the local community are invited to join the Academy Association (for a period of four years). It is not something that should be entered into lightly as meetings regularly last a few hours.

If you wish to contact the association or have any questions regarding the academy association please email the Academy Association Clerk: l.harris@fmat.co.uk

I am extremely proud to be associated with Fairfax Academy, and to do my small part to continue the fine traditions that my Grandfather started as the first Headmaster. I am a member of the local community with two young children and with a background in finance and management. I believe I can bring valuable insight into the governance and running of the academy.

I am a Business and Economics teacher with 11 year’s teaching experience. I currently work at two secondary academies within Birmingham. I believe that effective governance of schools and academies provides the support and oversight that is necessary for educational providers to move forward consistently to the benefit of all stakeholders. I have a particular passion for leadership improvement and the quality of teaching and learning.

As an experienced practitioner with middle and senior leader experience I believe I can add professional expertise and guidance to the Academy Association as it seeks to further improve the school and the wide variety of stakeholders that look to Fairfax to provide outstanding outcomes.

I look forward to working as part of the Academy Association and am honoured and privileged to do so.

Co-opted Governor

I have been a governor at Fairfax for many years and I have seen many changes. I have served as chair of the personnel committee prior to the new association structure. I want to be a part of the process of supporting and enabling the academy to serve the community in which it stands so that future students have the best possible opportunities.

Living close to Fairfax and attending school council meetings gives me some insight as to how the school is perceived. I have been proud to be associated with Fairfax since 1966!

I was appointed to the Governors after responding to an advertisement in 2009. At that time I was newly retired and had recently moved to Sutton Coldfield after a career in the education services of five different Local Authorities around the country. The move was a return to the town of my upbringing. In my working life I was involved with support to schools in the fields of admissions, disciplinary issues, transport, student awards, travellers’ services and pupil referral units. My experience covers most aspects of school management and finance. I have two adult daughters – one working for Liverpool University in a biomedical research field, and one who works in advertising in Australia. They went to school in the Scunthorpe area where we were living at the time. I am pleased to have the opportunity to support Fairfax Academy as a way of continuing my involvement with professional matters, and becoming reacquainted with the local community.
